Exterior Waterproofing

Exterior waterproofing focuses on stopping water from coming through your home’s foundation. This is the best way to address any water issues as it stops the water from getting into the basement in the first place. This process involves exterior excavation down to the home’s footings, this can range from 3′-9′ depending on the home. Once excavation is complete and foundation wall is exposed, any visible cracks will be sealed and foundation will be parged to create a smooth surface.

The smooth surface allows for a continuous application of the liquid applied waterproofing membrane, this membrane cures into a rubber like material which is impermeable to water. Once the waterproofing membrane has cured, exterior drainboard is installed which will help direct water to the new footing drain system. The footing drain system is then installed which consists of a 4″ perforated pipe with filter sock wrapped in #57 gravel and filter fabric.

This drain system is typically connected to an interior sump pump which will collect any water against the foundation and pump it away from the house. The concept behind exterior waterproofing is stopping water from going through the foundation, collecting said water and ensuring it is either pumped or gravity drained way from the home’s foundation. The water cannot be allowed to sit next to the foundation as this is the main reason why homes experience structural/settling issues.
