What is Basement Waterproofing?

Is your basement damp? Are you noticing mold beginning to grow on the walls? Water seeping in
during heavy rains? If so, then it might be time that you start thinking about basement
waterproofing. Finding water in your basement can lead to major structural issues as well as health
problems down the road, so taking preventative steps can help you to keep your property safe and
ensure you do not face expensive repair bills later.

What is basement waterproofing?
While finding that your basement is damp can be worrying, acting quickly will ensure that you are
not facing any major costs. Waterproofing your basement should be an essential task for any
homeowner, and there are several ways to do this.

Exterior basement waterproofing
One of the most effective methods of keeping your home protected is exterior waterproofing. This is
the process of excavating the exterior of your property and applying a waterproofing membrane to
the foundation wall alongside adding a drainage system to prevent water from building up. The
drainage system usually entails a perimeter footing drain which either ties into an interior sump
pump or daylights somewhere on the property.

Interior basement waterproofing
Another popular type of waterproofing is installed on the interior of your home. Adding sealants and
waterproof paint can prevent water from seeping through any cracks or holes in your walls but this
will eventually fail as it does NOT fix the issue. In fact, it can make waters worse by trapping water
inside your home’s foundation which could then lead to much more costly structural foundation
repairs. The proper way to address waterproofing issues from the interior is to install an interior
perimeter drain system with sump pump. This system is also connected to drainboard which is
installed along the foundation wall, creating a barrier and redirecting any minor seepage through the
foundation wall to the perimeter drain system underneath the slab.
