Drainage Solutions for your Alexandria Home

If your home is in Alexandria, Virginia, then you probably have a residence on expansive soils. Northern Virginia is known to have clay in its soil. Expansive soils swell when wet and shrink when dry. As a homeowner, you want to divert water away from your home and protect your foundation. Standing water near your home may lead to mold growth, interior flooding, and foundation damage.

Downspout Discharge Lines

Downspouts are attached to the gutters around the perimeter of your home, and they help divert water away from your home. The problem with downspouts is that they usually dump the rainwater right next to your home, so what can you do? It’s recommended to extend the length of your downspout. That can be done with PVC connections or corrugated piping. Corrugated piping is flexible and inexpensive, but is more prone to deterioration and tree root damage. PVC connections are durable and last longer, but cost more for installation.

Downspout cleanouts can be attached to your downspout for regular maintenance. It’s user-friendly for homeowners. By unscrewing the lid and running the hose, the downspout extension can be cleared of debris.

Pop-up emitters can be attached to the end of a discharge line. It provides an exit point for the water at the base of your property away from the foundation. Pop-ups are also easily maintained for homeowners and the debris from the gutters can be easily collected and removed.

Sump Pump Discharge Line

Sump pumps are installed at the lowest point of your home, usually the basement. When groundwater starts to accumulate and the sump pump is activated, it will pump it out of the home. A discharge line can be added to keep the groundwater from returning back to your foundation. It is important to ensure your contractor installs a freeze gap with your sump pump line. The freeze gap allows water to pump out even if your discharge line gets frozen.
